£500m boost to Midland Main Line

Monday, July 16th 2012 01:00

A £500m scheme to electrify the Midland Main line between Sheffield & London is expected to be announced today.

This is just one small part of a bigger government plan to boost the rail network and stimulate the economy.

The government plan to invest 9 billion pounds into rail routes across England and Wales.

Some lines would be reopened, others electrified including the Midlands Main Line route between St Pancreas and Sheffield.

But improvements would mean some services become faster, possibly more expensive, but not until after the next general election.

If plans get the go ahead, Derbyshire train maker Bombardier is expected to be involved, after they missed out on a government contract last year.
