Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police resigns over Hillsborough

Wednesday, October 24th 2012 01:00

Sir Norman Bettison has stepped down as head of West Yorkshire Police following criticism of his involvement in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster.

His departure comes ahead of a planned meeting this afternoon which was to consider his role in the aftermath of the tragedy.

He was referred to the IPCC regarding allegations that he provided misleading information while working as a Chief Inspector in South Yorkshire. He also took part in a subsequent internal inquiry into the police's handling of the disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

Sir Norman had been due to retire in March, but has been under mounting pressure to resign.

In a statement, he said that the questions circulating about his involvement were becoming a"distraction to policing".

Sir Norman added: "It has been a privilege to serve the public as a Police Officer for more than 40 years and I wish the Force and the Police Service every success in the future."
