Con men operating in Derbyshire

Thursday, July 12th 2012 01:00

Derbyshire County Council are warning people not to be fooled by rogue callers offering free burglar alarms.

Elderly and vunerable residents in the county are being targeted by con men claiming crime is rising in their area. They first offer the free alarm which they claim are linked to the police station.

After arranging a follow up home visit they engage in a high pressure sales pitch for the items which have a costly maintenance agreement tied in after the customer has signed up.

In one of the worst examples reported to Derbyshire County Council an elderly Derbyshire dementia sufferer was pursuaded to pay well over the odds for an alarm even though he already had one installed in his home.

If you have been targeted by rogue traders you can report the incident on the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040 506.
