Hillsborough files to be made public

Wednesday, July 4th 2012 01:00

Secret files in connect with the Hillsborough disaster are to be made public later this year.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel have looked through more than 400 thousand pages of documents relating to the disaster & will make their findings public on 12th September.

96 Liverpool fans died following a crush on overcrowded terraces at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium during an FA Cup semi-final in 1989.

The Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, said: "I can confirm that the disclosure on September 12 will take place at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral."

It is hoped the panel's findings will shed new light as to exactly what caused the tragedy.

A report into the disaster by Lord Justice Taylor, published in 1990, found that the main reason for the disaster was a failure of "police control".

Last month the panel, led by the Bishop of Liverpool, said the documents will be disclosed to the families first.

The panel, set up in 2009, has emphasised that one of its central objectives has been consultation with the bereaved families.
