Hird Heading for Chesterfield

Friday, June 22nd 2012 18:00

Chesterfield Football Club have completed the signing of highly rated defender Sam Hird on a two–year deal after his contract at Doncaster Rovers expired.

Sam agreed a deal with the club earlier this month before jetting off on holiday and has now completed a medical and signed for the Spireites until 2014

The centre-half, who is also comfortable at right-back, spent five years with his boyhood club Doncaster Rovers and made a total of 143 appearances; including 34 in the club’s Championship campaign last season.

Hird revealed in an interview that Manager John Sheridan played a big part in his decision to switch to the B2net Stadium.

Sheridan made it clear to the former Doncaster man that he would play a key role in the Spireites season, a factor that appealed to the defender.

"It’s obviously positive when a manager says that especially when you come somewhere and the manager makes you feel as wanted as he does it gives you a big insight into what he wants to do with the football club”.

"He really wants to do well and so do I and I’m sure that everybody else does. It’s a good fit and I’m sure everybody will be pushing now to make sure that we have a good season”

When asked about the future of Chesterfield Football Club Hird indicated that he has no intentions of staying in League Two.

"I’m sure the lads here were disappointed to get relegated last season and they’ll be under the same impressions that they’re too good to play in League Two so we’ll all be pushing to get Chesterfield back up to League One and who knows maybe eventually to the Championship”.
